The mission of the department is to provide exceptional academic and professional preparation for careers in physical education and exercise science.  Emphasis is placed upon the development of academic, practical, and critical skills needed for lifelong learning as advocates of health promotion and disease prevention.

Curriculum objectives embedded in courses in the department of exercise science at Lyndon State College align with the mission of the Vermont Department of Health to enable Vermonters to lead healthy lives in healthy communities.  To this end, undergraduate majors will plan, organize, design, implement, educate, promote, and/or participate in one or more of the following local events:

  1. Cross Country Ski Marathon
  2. Snow-shoe
  3. Green versus gold physical activity challenge
  4. Strength and conditioning – health and fitness provision of services
  5. Run The Ridges First Annual Walk/Run
  6. Vermont City Marathon
  7. Northeast Kingdom Youth Services Shelter Walk

Healthy Vermonters Logo

Fit and Healthy Vermonters is a coordinated comprehensive approach to promoting healthy eating and increasing physical activity in Vermont.

Our activities to promote physical activity in 2006 include:

  • Daylight Savings Challenge: a contest encouraging students, families, schools to “Move More, Eat More Colors and Turn it Off (TV).”
  • Implementation of SPARK: an after school based physical activity program.
  • Girls on Track: a running and self esteem building program for girls in grades 6-8.
Establishing community based physical activity programs (Get Moving Vermont) in communities throughout Vermont, and a Toolkit to assist communities with these efforts.

The Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Logo

The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports promotes and advocates for fitness and health for a broad spectrum of Vermonters through education, recognition and endorsement. Activities in 2006 include:

  • Publicizing “Get Moving Vermont,” a statewide collaborative program that provides incentives for people to become physically active.
  • Educating people at fitness fairs and Walk To School Day
  • Developing video and web-based public service announcements that encourage increased activity and nutritious eating
  • Recognizing work sites and individuals for outstanding efforts promoting physical fitness and sports
  • Rewarding children who participate in an annual statewide physical activity challenge
  • Supporting the Green Mountain Senior Games and Vermont State Agency Road Race
