UPDATE FROM CECELIA MINTON (04/13/06):

“Curves of Livingston” Celebrates Physical Fitness

Let’s celebrate! That’s the buzz at Curves of Livingston. In affiliation with Fitness for Lifestyle, Curves members were participants of the President’s Challenge “Active Lifestyle” program. The program requires a commitment to performing regular physical activity 30 minutes per day at least 5 days per week, for a total of 6 weeks. Activities such as working out at the gym, playing tennis as well as performing house chores qualifies participants for earning the award. Fitness advocate CC Minton states, “We're excited about the first 6 week session that ended on March 31st. We're currently in our 2nd session and have a waiting list for the next. The first six weeks of the program was a great sucess! We're looking forward to a successful year! The Active Lifestyle program is a great program to “Get America Moving” and we started right here in Livingston, NJ.

"Fun and Fit In New York City"

Fun, fit and fabulous (FFF)! That's what participants of the FFF program say. The program targets residents in specific areas of the city that show the highest incidents of diabetes and high blood pressure. Fitness for Lifestyle, a organization in support of the program, did just that. Provided fun, fitness and the feeling of being fabulous. Through a 45 minute aerobic routine, participants worked through team building exercises to get the job done - to be fit and fabulous but also to have FUN!

doing “individual activities” with the focus on fun and not necessarily
organized sports and to balance it with appropriate healthy nutrition
behaviors.

As a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine,
American Dietetic Association, Osteoporosis Council and the FIT Leader
Council, I will also daily promote the programs and messages of the PCPFS

Physical activity is a critical component of the equation to solve the problems of overweight and obesity. The real challenge is in motivating individuals to be physically active.  Switch2Health technology will quantify physical activity and reward consumers. Proprietary technology and algorithms will biometrically monitor and authenticate individuals.  Activity will be converted to reward points redeemable for valuable discounts, goods, or services.  “Health is a great motivator.  So is money.” – Tommy Thompson (DHHS).  Consumers respond to and are driven by rewards.  The Switch2Health device will be a wrist worn fashionable device and fun for all ages.  Device plus reward structure equals motivation.

Union City Spanish Seventh Day Adventist Church:
Una Vida Sana y Activa Program

Contact: Claudia Garcia del Puerto, Health Ministries Director

E-mail: claudiapgdp@hotmail.com

The SDA church encourages people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is well known that the Latino community is one of the U.S. population groups most affected by obesity and overweight. To help improve this obesity and sedentary epidemic among Latinos, in September of the year 2005 we started a free program called “Una Vida Sana y Activa” (A Healthy and Active Life”) for the church’s surrounding Spanish speaking community. Our program offers free physical exercise, nutrition, and healthy cooking classes for the entire family. Every other Sunday, children, youth, adults, and seniors meet at 9 AM to exercise in different ways (e.g., walking, exercises with a ball, on a chair, with weights, etc.) for one hour. Participants receive encouragement to practice what they have learned in class at least three times a week for 30 minutes at their homes. Next, they receive either practical instruction on nutrition, based on sound scientific knowledge, or a healthy cooking class. To present, our program has 38 registered members.  The youngest member is a two year old boy and the oldest is a 67 year old senior. The physical education instructors are Wences Arboleda, a Physical Therapist, and Gliceria Arboleda, a Physical Education Teacher. We are now planning to start a monthly sport night for the family in May. This activity will be the second Saturday night of every month and it will include basketball and other sports for the entire family.

YMCA of Eastern Union County, Rahway Branch

E-mail: mjohnson@ymcaeuc.org

The Rahway Branch YMCA has signed up with the National YMCA’s program titled “Activate America.” Our goal is to increase awareness, interest and programs concerning the importance of increased daily physical activity for all ages. We are attempting to collaborate with our service area representatives to make this happen. Our YMCA has joined and begun the SilverSneakers exercise program for seniors. Oxford Medical and Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield will pay for the participant’s membership and facility utilization. We are in the process of beginning collaboration with the NJ Devils and the National Hockey League with developing a street hockey league. Our pre-school department has just begun incorporating 30 minutes – one hour of physical activity for the students (ages 2 – 4). Our third season Dodgeball has been very popular with the older teens. Finally, in September 2006, our facility will also participate in the YMCA nation-wide “America on the Move” program. The goal is for all Y’s to get their members to take a total of one billion steps. Collaboration with PCPFS would therefore be extremely helpful with recognition, promotion and prestige. Both organizations have the same goal – improve the activity and conditioning levels of everyone. A combination of resources would reach more people and therefore help us reach our goals.
