American Hiking Society's signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day (NTD), inspires nearly a million trail enthusiasts at thousands of events nationwide to flock to their favorite trails to discover, learn about and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects. The slogan for NTD 2006, “Experience Your Outdoors, speaks to all Americans and encourages them to get outside, get active, and experience the wonders of trails in their own communities and throughout the country. America's 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for exercise, study, photography, camping, relaxing or solitude. Trails take us to good physical and mental health by providing us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and to escape from our daily challenges and stresses.
