Alas de America Institute seeks to create a culture of wellness within the community. We educate, support, and empower community members to improve and maintain their overall health and well-being through healthy lifestyle choices. One of the ways we create a culture of wellness within the community is by making yoga more accessible to all. At present, we are working with groups as diverse as the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) and Yoga Ed ™, an educational program aligned with California’s Challenge Physical Education Standards.

We will be presenting several workshops. One such workshop will be Anusara: Yoga for the Upper Body. Through different core yoga poses, Anusara will teach people to bring the alignment of the body into everyday activities. This will assist in preventing back injuries, easing excess strain on joints, and increasing optimal energy. In addition to practicing yoga, Alas de America will be hosting their 1st Annual Yoga Fitness Walk on November 5, 2006. Participants will encounter many different styles of yoga along a three-mile path. The objective is to create an open network for studios and give the public the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of yoga traditions.

Alta Loma Junior High School, the 5 time President's Challenge Champions from the state of California, have a mission to get everyone at our school involved in some kind of activity to promote fitness. We started with "Super Size Me" last week and a very involved unit on nutrition including a visit from Nutrionist, Lisa Johnson. We ended the unit with a "bring a healthy lunch" to school day. What a great time.

This week we are completing a unit on Project Alert (drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and tobacco). In two weeks we start out "Walk across America" program, each student will have a pedometer and the goal is to walk from Los Angeles to Washington, DC (on paper of course). Students will compete with all the other classes in the school to see they can reach Washington, DC first. Parents and teachers will also participate. After the walk it is right onto Presidential Fitness Test and our chance to compete for our 6th State Championship. Our school is very proud of its accomplishments toward a lifetime of fitness.

Bike Teacher

E-mail: byron.friday@yahoo.com

Website: http://biketeacher.com

The mission of Bike Teacher is:
  • Giving people a reason to get back on the bicycle.
  • The philosophy behind free bike classes came about from what I perceived to be a missing link in the Los Angeles area bicycle culture- I believe that more people would get back on their bike and riding again if they had a practical and user friendly support group. Most cycling events, bike clubs, bike skills clinics usually have some sort of registration fee required in order to participate. I feel strongly that by hosting free events this will attract a new group of people who may not otherwise get regularly involved in cycling activities. If we give people a good reason to get back on the bike, they may have fun and start riding on a more regular basis?
Bike Teacher founder Byron ‘TGI’ Friday is hosting a free, once per month off-road mountain bikes class for first time and beginner riders. This class is for males, females, old and young! We will demonstrate and teach riding techniques and answer questions covering all aspects of the sport of mountain biking. The classes will be taught by expert level mountain bike riders.

A guiding principle of this nonprofit is fitness for clients and the staff that serve these special individuals. In January of 2005, a fully functional Fitness, Therapy & Recreation Center opened, utilizing the talents of a professional trainer to build exercise programs for staff and clients. 100% of management staff utilize the center, and most adult day program classes and non-public school classes rotate through the gym on a weekly fitness schedule. Twelve months after opening the gym, TERI launched a “Biggest Winner” weight loss and exercise competition which has yielded phenomenal results to date. Program offerings include circuit training, cardio equipment, free weights and weight machines. TERI’s commitment to being fit for life will continue throughout the life of this organization.
