How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for a year-round internship?
Students interested in a year-round internship should submit a cover letter, resume, and unofficial transcript to DOFAdminServices@fdic.gov. Students should specify whether they are applying for a STEP or SCEP internship.

How do I know what kind of internship to apply for (STEP or SCEP)?
STEP internships do not need to be directly related to a student’s academic or career goals. In the STEP program, there is no possibility for conversion to a competitive appointment upon completion of the program.

SCEP internships are based on the possibility of a student’s conversion to a competitive appointment within the FDIC upon completion of the program. A student is only eligible for the SCEP program if the work relates directly to their education and career goals. SCEP internships require that the student complete 640 hours of work time before the completion of their degree/certificate, in order to be eligible for conversion to a competitive appointment.

Both programs allow for full-time and part-time work schedules. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited school in order to be eligible for either program.
How will I know if my application is being considered?
All applications for will be considered live until candidates are contacted via phone and/or email.

When will I hear from you about an interview?
Candidates will be notified via phone and/or email regarding interviews and/or selection.

When will you make offers to successful applicants?
Tentative offers to successful applicants can be made anytime throughout the year.

How are offers made?
“Tentative” offers are made by telephone by the DOF administrative staff. All final offers will be made by FDIC’s Human Resources Branch, which will confirm grade and salary.
Do you pay travel/room and board expenses?
The FDIC does not pay for travel or room and board expenses.
What is the salary for interns?
See the pay grade chart on the main page.
To whom should I address my cover letter?
Please address your cover letter to “DOF Admin Services”.
If I am accepted in the SCEP program, am I guaranteed a permanent position upon completion of the program?
No. While students have the possibility of being converted to a competitive appointment, conversion depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to work load, position availability, and management approval.
