Lillian Greene-Chamberlain, Ph.D.

Lillian Greene-Chamberlain, Ph.D.Lillian Greene-Chamberlain, Ph.D. of Silver Spring, Maryland – Dr. Greene-Chamberlain has been a leader in developing health education, physical fitness, recreation and sports programs nationally and internationally for more than 30 years. She was the first U.S. National Champion in 800m before it became an Olympic event, the first African-American woman to represent the U.S. in the 400m and 800m in international competition, a gold medalist in the Exhibition 400m at the 1959 Pan American Games, world and national record setter in women’s middle distance track events, and three-time member of the All America Track & Field Team. Dr. Greene-Chamberlain is the first woman and American to serve as Director of the Physical Education & Sports Program for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), headquartered in Paris, a position she held for ten years. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the American University in Paris (1979-1989) and was the first woman and American to be invited to deliver the Prince Philip Fellows Lecture in the House of Lords in London (1982). Dr. Greene-Chamberlain has played an integral role in the expansion of the Special Olympics in the U.S. and been actively involved in the American Running Association, American Medical Athletic Association, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and a trustee of the Women’s Sports Foundation (1993-1999).
