Website's Offer No-Cost Options for Electronic Filing, Tax Preparation

Looking for the best possible experience this income tax season?  Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of two helpful website's that provide important tax season information, including free electronic filing options.

The Montana Department of Revenue's website, mt.gov/revenue, offers information about a variety of electronic filing options, including state tax forms that can be electronically filed for free.  For tax year 2008, taxpayers can electronically file all of the popular individual income tax forms—short form (2EZ), intermediate form (2M), and long form (2)—and the elderly homeowner/renter credit (2EC) directly on the department’s website at no cost.  In addition, employers can electronically file the annual Montana withholding report (MW3) directly on the department’s website for free.

A "one-stop" website called MontanaFreeFile.org offers taxpayers information on free electronic filing options, as well as volunteer tax preparation sites, for both federal and state income taxes.  The website is sponsored by a partnership of government and non-profit entities—including the Montana Department of Revenue, Montana’s Credit Unions, Montana Legal Services Association, and Rural Dynamics, Inc.  AARP Tax-Aide Montana is lending support to the project.
