Welcome

Welcome to the Mercury and the Environment web site! The goal of this site is to provide scientific background information and to outline current policies, programs, and practical guidance related to mercury. If you are looking for a general overview of the issues and concerns associated with mercury, the basic facts page is a great place to start and contains links to the more detailed pages. Within this site, you will also find information about fish consumption advisories, cleaning up small mercury spills, and safe disposal, as well as a list of mercury-related links.

Environment and Health

Selecting the "Environment and Health" heading on the menu bar to the left will open up an extended menu of subtopics. This section will be of interest if you are looking for information about mercury's chemical properties, biogeochemical cycling, transport through the atmosphere, global budget, and the impacts of mercury pollution on the environment and human health.

Sources of Mercury

The subsections within Sources of Mercury describe the various natural and human-induced mechanisms that release mercury into the environment. You can find information about natural mercury sources, products that contain mercury (such as thermometers and fluorescent lights), and Canadian releases.

Mercury Management

The "Mercury Management" section contains information about the various approaches that are taken to address mercury issues. The subsections provide additional information about international initiatives, Federal legislation, Canadian programs, Canada Wide Standards, and activities at the provincial/territorial level.
