19. Archeological Investigations at Zion National
Park.
Connor, Melissa A.
and Susan Vetter
In September, 1984, a seven to eight person archeological crew inventoried
portions of Zion National Park. They documented the archeological sites in
Zion Canyon, Parunuweap Canyon and the trails going through the Kolob area.
In all, 69 archeological sites were examined, 37 of them were documented
for the first time. The sites ranged from the Basketmaker period to the
historic period; from rock art panels to habitation sites which included
rooms, granaries and cists.
In the course of this work, the archeological collections of Zion National
Park were shipped to the Midwest Archeological Center for re-analysis and
study. A portion of this report describes the items found in the
collections.
The remainder of the rport is a summary of the results of the 1984
inventory and recommendations for further work.
Due to the sensitive nature
of this subject this report is
available to professional
archeologists only. If you
order this manuscript we may
contact you for verification of
your profession.
