15. Archeological Survey of Tree Removal Zones at Wilsons Creek
National Monument.
Ray, Jack H. and Susan M. Monk
The purpose of the archeological survey was the discovery and recording of
archeological sites in four proposed areas to be affected by removal of
'exotic' vegetation (i.e., osage orange and cedar trees) by heavy
machinery. The survey was conducted in compliance with Federal legislation
and Executive Order 11593, designed to protect and enhance archeological,
historical, and architectural resources which might be adversely affected
by projects supported by Federal funds or requiring Federal permits or
licenses.
The major objective of the survey was related to the management need to
know the location and number of archeological sites to be affected by the
proposed tree removal activity. The survey was also designed to contribute
to the expansion of the site inventory for the park, thereby increasing the
data base pertaining to settlement patterns in the Wilson Creek Valley.
