PROBLEMS: Because of injustice from employer, people's attitudes, and general socio-economic problems in Uganda, living positively with AIDS is difficult without proper counselling. For example, I was a victim of injustice when I lost my job with Kampala Sheraton Hotel after testing HIV+. PROJECT: The PWA Peer Educator Project is geared at sensitising the public about Aids. I am now a Peer Educator who helps people, most of whom are uneducated, to change their behaviour by stopping risky practices. RESULTS: Through this project, 57 PWA Peer Educators have been trained. Personally, I have reached over 600 people to discuss my personal experiences and my behaviour change, and I have seen others change as a result. Moreover, this has helped me to live positively myself. LESSONS LEARNED: In Third World countries where the illiteracy rate is high, and poverty and ignorance are prevalent, education is the only solution to the AIDS epidemic. Using PWAs as Peer educators can promote the behaviour change process.
