2. DNV Healthcare Receives Deeming Authority

 

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on September 26 started recognizing Det Norske Veritas Healthcare Inc. as an organization that runs a national accreditation program for hospitals wanting to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid program.

4. CMS Eliminates Temporary IVIG-Related Code for OPPS 2009

 

Medicare's hospital outpatient prospective payment system in calendar year 2009 will not recognize the temporary Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System code signifying costs associated with procuring i.v. immune globulin (IVIG). According to a prepublication version of the government's final rule on the payment system, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services wants hospitals to report charges for IVIG preadministration-related services in the same manner as for charges for other drugs' preadministration-related services.

5. Medicare Continues 12 Quality Measures for Home Health Agencies

 

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) wants home health agencies to continue reporting 12 quality measures, including whether patients have less pain when moving around. These measures are part of the notice that CMS published on November 3 concerning rate updates for Medicare's home health prospective payment system in calendar year 2009.

6. Transplant Pharmacists: Be Prepared To Answer Surveyors' Questions

 

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released an advance copy of the protocol that the federal government expects state inspectors to use when surveying an organ transplant program for compliance with Medicare's conditions of participation. Pharmacists involved with organ transplant programs should be prepared to answer eight general questions.

7. Nimotop Leaving U.S. Market

 

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals announced at the end of October that the company decided to stop marketing Nimotop capsules, which Cardinal Health manufactures under contract. (According to FDA databases, three firms market generic nimodipine capsules.)

8. AstraZeneca To Stop Marketing Foscavir After April 2009

 

The remaining inventory of Foscavir will be gone by April 30, 2009, AstraZeneca has told FDA. (According to FDA databases, Hospira Inc. has manufactured Foscavir under contract to AstraZeneca for at least three years and also makes generic foscarnet sodium injection.)

9. New Online Form for Reporting Controlled-Substance Theft, Loss

 

The Drug Enforcement Administration recently announced that its updated online form for reporting theft or loss requires registrants to state the National Drug Code for each controlled substance reported.

10. FDA Finalizes New Requirement for Outpatient Prescription Labels

 

By July 1, 2009, pharmacies dispensing prescription drug products to consumers must provide the following statement about undesirable effects: "Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088." FDA said it recognizes five options for distributing the so-called side effects statement.

11. Pennsylvania Medicaid Patients Received Outdated Drugs, Audit Suggests

 

A federal audit revealed that Pennsylvania authorized payment of nearly $3.2 million over a two-year period for apparently outdated prescription drugs that pharmacies had dispensed to Medicaid patients.

12. Joint Commission Gets Conditional Approval for CAH Deeming Authority

 

The federal government on October 24 announced conditional approval of the Joint Commission's request for continued recognition as a national accreditation program for critical access hospitals seeking to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid program.

13. Prescription Drug Costs Higher in Some Poor Neighborhoods

 

A recent study in Florida found that, on average, four common prescription drugs were more expensive in poor neighborhoods than wealthy areas. Researchers noted all areas had pharmacies that charged less, but that some work was involved to find the affordable options, according to a report from Reuters.

14. Generic Diabetes Drug May Help Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

 

A meta-analysis in the current issue of Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that the generic drug metformin, compared with other oral diabetes medications including rosiglitazone, reduces the risk of death from heart disease in patients with diabetes mellitus, according to a Houston Chronicle article on rising drug costs.

15. Pharmacy School To Lead Nationwide Program in Pharmacogenomics

 

With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, will develop PharmGenEd—an educational curriculum that focuses on basic pharmacogenomic concepts and clinical applications. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Pharmacists Association, and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy will collaborate with the pharmacy school to promote the educational campaign.

ASHP is trying out a program to provide live feedback to pharmacy practice residents presenting posters at the Midyear Clinical Meeting. Residents have told us that they seek this type of input on their projects. 17. Medication Safety Team Grant Applications Now Available

 

The ASHP Foundation's Medication Safety Team Grant Program is now accepting applications. The program, which is sponsored by Omnicell Inc., supports research related to the use of bar-code scanning technology at the point of medication administration to enhance the safe use of medications. This grant program is available to research teams composed of a combination of pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and informatics experts. The research teams must include a pharmacist as a co-principal investigator, and the proposed research must involve the use of bar-code scanning technology at the point of medication administration. Two $40,000 grants will be awarded. The deadline to submit completed applications is April 1, 2009.

The ASHP Foundation’s Annual Donor Matching Program began November 1st and will continue through December 31st. Thanks to the generosity of the ASHP Foundation Board of Directors, this year’s donor matching sponsor, all gifts made to the Foundation by individual donors now through the end of the calendar year will be matched dollar for dollar. Federal Services Junior Investigator Research Grant Accepting Applications

The ASHP Foundation is now accepting applications to the Federal Services Junior Investigator Research Grant Program, which is sponsored by Abbott. Grants will be awarded to junior investigators for practice-based research related to medication adherence and persistence studies in individuals with either HIV/AIDS, dyslipidemia, autoimmune diseases, psychiatric disorders or stages 3 and 4 renal disease who receive care in a Federal healthcare facility. Two $25,000 grants are available. The deadline to submit applications is January 9, 2009. Apply for Junior Investigator Research Grant by February 13th 

The ASHP Foundation’s Junior Investigator Research Grant Program is accepting applications through February 13, 2009. This grant program, sponsored by the Joseph A. Oddis Endowment, supports practice-based research in medication use conducted by pharmacist new investigators. Practice-based research affects a wide range of medication-use topics, including program evaluations; patient education; patient outcomes and effectiveness of medication therapy; health care quality; medication use in minority, elderly and other special populations; medication costs and financing; program evaluations; and access to medications.Two $20,000 grants are available. AJHP Series on Research Fundamentals

The American Journal of Health-SystemPharmacy is publishing “Research Fundamentals,” a series of articles that covers important topics in pharmacy research. These include valid research design, appropriate data collection and analysis, application of research findings in practice, and publication of research results. ASHP Foundation Announces 2008 Awards Recipients, Finalists

The ASHP Foundation has selected the 2008 recipients for the Literature Awards and the Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards, and has named the finalists for the 2008 Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety.
