Objective: To assess the knowledge of adolescents about STD, HIV/AAIDS and condom use in rural Burkina Faso. Methods A KAP survey was conducted in a rural province of Burkina Faso (Sanmatenga province ) among adolescents 15-19 years . In the study area 900 households were selected by random sampling. From each household all eligible adolescents were invited to participate. A standardized KAP questionnaire was administered to all participants after being translated in adolescents'native language.Data were analyzed by IMPS 3.1 and the following statistical test were used: Chi square test of Mantel- Haenszel and Fischer exact test. A value of p>0.005 was considered significant. Results A total of 363 adolescents were interviewed, 193 girls and 170 boys, giving a sex ratio of 0.9. Their main sociodemographic characteristics were the following: mean age of 17.1 years, 72% were unmarried, 52.8% were Muslims and 85.4% were illiterate.Knowledge of STDs was very low ( 4.7% ) ad the main source of information on STDs was radio ( 61.5% ).One adolescent out of 5 has presented at one time signs suggesting STD symptoms. Awareness about HIV/AIDS was high ( 87.7% ) and here also the main source of information was radio.Only 32.8% of the boys and 22% of the girls knew about the condom ( p>10-7 ).Unmarried adolescents knew better condom than married ones ( p>0.0005 ). Condom used during first intercourse was very low ( 4.4% ) despite the fact that during the last 12 months, 20% of the adolescents had at least 2 sexual partners. Condom as a mean to prevent HIV/AIDS was mentioned by only 32.7% of the adolescents. Conclusion: Adolescents in the Sanmatenga province in Burkina Faso know HIV/AIDS than other STDs. Condom knowledge and use are low. Prevention programs should increase adolescents' awareness about other STDs, inform them about the link between these STDs and HIV/AIDS and promote the use of condom among them.Key Words: adolescents-STDs- HIV/AIDS- condom-rural Burkina Faso- prevention
