KAB study on AIDS awareness among hotel employees.

Usha , Kumar S; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1993 Jun 6-11; 9: 843 (abstract no. PO-D13-3753).

SUBJECT: In the city of Madras different levels of Hotels have been taken for this KAB study among the employees in various departments. OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of awareness of HIV/AIDS among the Hotel employees. METHOD: A pilot study has been conducted using an interview schedule consisting of 40 questions in two languages (one is local language Tamil besides English) to suit the educational background of the employees. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. RESULT: 1) Out of 100 persons interviewed 21 are not aware of Condom use. Eventhough 79 persons are aware of condoms, only 55 have agreed that condoms can prevent AIDS, the rest that 24 persons have disagreed that condoms can prevent AIDS. 2) Out of the same 100 employees 23 persons have admitted to having multipartnered sex. Out of that 23 persons only 50% have used condoms sometime or other. Paradoxically as high 70% have answered that multipartnered sex spreads AIDS. LESSON: Inspite of high level of awareness many hotel employees continue to have multipartnered sex without condom. There is a dire need for IEC programmes and intervention strategies.
