KAP on AIDS in irrigation, rural and urban communities of Chiredzi District.

Chibatamoto P; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1992 Jul 19-24; 8: 204 (abstract no. PuD 9034).

Blair Research Institute, Min. of Health, Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVES: The assumption was that there was differential awareness of AIDS among different communities particularly the modes of transmission and consequences of contracting HIV. Therefore, the study looked into question of which communities and groups were less knowledgeable about the disease and thus required more education. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: Between June 1991 and July 1991, a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices study on AIDS was undertaken among 499 elders and 513 school pupils of three mixed populations (irrigation, urban and rural) of Shangaan and Shona speaking communities situated in lowveld of Zimbabwe. Questionnaires and focus group discussions were used to collect the data. RESULTS: All respondents had heard about AIDS. Most elders (91%) knew of 2 modes of transmission (perinatal and heterosexual). Most elders (80%) claimed to be condom users. Irrigation area had highest percentage of elders (45%) who contracted an STD. Ninety four percent of urban, 70% rural and 71% of irrigation respondents who had contracted an STD in past year claimed to use condoms. CONCLUSIONS: 1) All communities are equally aware of AIDS though, they don't seem to be changing their sexual behaviour judged by number of sex partners and episodes they had had. 2) People have a negative attitude towards PW AIDS. 3) There is an urgent need for research team to come up with a holistic health education intervention package based on local experiences to effect positive behaviour change in the communities.
