KAP results regarding condom use.

Rosario S, Pareja R; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1992 Jul 19-24; 8: D497 (abstract no. PoD 5653).

COIN, Dominican Republic.

OBJECTIVES: To compare KAP results regarding condom use of female sex workers (FSW) with those of their clients. To identify KAP's of clients of FSW regarding STD's. METHODS: Eight Focus Groups were done with FSW selected from working sites. Another eight Focus Groups were made with men who were identified as regular clients of female sex workers. A total of 65 FSW and 80 sexually active men (both married and bachelors). A Guide was developed with pre-test Focus Groups sessions as well as ice-breaking exercises to allow them experience a no-threatening context which proved to be a key factor for their opening up and going in depth in their opinions regarding condom use. RESULTS: By comparing answers given by FSW and those of clients, there are no significant differences in the reasons for not using the condoms. Those received by the FSW coincide with those reasons admitted by the me. The major difference is the amount of emphasis and importance given to the arguments against its use. The center around macho image, feeling issues, physical inconveniences, symbol of trust/mistrust and unfaithfulness with their steady partners. Men prefer sold-bought condoms to free ones. In regards to STD's, they had a very high confessed incidence. Significant is the folkloric use of remedies for curing STDs (like the bottle) and the mistrust of the medical prescribed treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The results allowed the program to make content definition of the educational materials, offered specific guidelines for program intervention and served as Guideline for Implementation Plan Design.
