OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: To find out the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Primary School pupils that influence the spread of AIDS. METHOD: 311 Primary School pupils (average age = 14) in Kabale district were randomly selected. Their knowledge, attitudes, practices related to AIDS were examined. RESULTS: 300/311 pupils had heard about AIDS - causes, methods of transmission and prevention. Commonest sources of information included Radio (188/311), Newspapers, (102), Friends (128/311) and religious leader (104/311). 184 (59%) pupils said they had had sexual relationship. Pupils were asked reasons why they engaged in Sex and disturbing information like "was forced" (27) and expected a reward from partner (29) were obtained. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The study shows (1) Mass media is an important Source of AIDS information (2) many pupils are sexually active and at risk of catching AIDS and getting pregnant. (3) Sexual abuse or exploitation of children needs to be investigated further.
