Objective: To empower young people to work in peer education for a healthy and responsible sexual life. Background: A group of young people from 10 to 24 years of age selected from 3 districts of Lima, Callao e Iquitos, Peru. These geographic areas are of high risk in all respects. These are areas of limited educational and health services, in regard to access and quality. There are high levels of unemployment that has facilitated delinquency. The environment is very difficult to carry out the activities that the youngsters have been prepared to work as peer educators. Methods: A participatory methodology was utilized for the training. Participants we the core of all levels of the project development. They have participated from the conceptualization to the implementation of all activities. Results: 240 boys and girls, and young adults have been trained and worked as peer educators. They have also participated as trainers. They have reached within the last year about 5000 adolescents in interpersonal contacts and with follow up. Through group activities and public outreach they contacted around 45000 adolescents. The participants have not only worked in the prevention of STDs HIV, AIDS and drugs but also in community projects to reach gangs to get them involved in positive activities. Utilizing innovated approaches among them games, fairs, public transportation singing, radio spots, etc. Lesson Learned: Peer educators have learned that they have the potential and power to reach and make a difference in the life of other youngsters like them. Also they have learned that they can change their own life for a better future.
