OBJECTIVE: (1) To illustrate the socio-economic and cultural factors that facilitate risky behavioral patterns among young women (aged 17-25 yrs) in two post-secondary school institutions. (2) To propose alternative strategies in order to promote behavior change among young women. METHOD: Discussions during training of peer educators, follow-ups on peer educator training and focus groups, on factors that lead them to engage in risky sexual practices even in the face of AIDS. RESULTS: A variety of factors were given, chief amongst them being difficulty in initiating discussions about safer sex with their partners, maintaining a safer sex option and cutting down on the number of sexual partners. CONCLUSION: There is a relationship between sex and security (social, economic, emotional). Women should be brought up to be more secure adults and be less dependent. They should be encouraged to engage in income-generating activities where they are less used or abused.
