OBJECTIVE: To find effective ways to reduce young people's readiness to discriminate against PWHIV through educational programs. METHODS: A questionnaire study with a representative (West-Berlin) sample of 1041 students aged twelve to eighteen years. RESULTS: From multiple regression analysis, the main hypothesis was confirmed: the subjective perception of the danger as well as the perception of one's competence to cope with the challenge of AIDS both influence the readiness to discriminate against PWHIV. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Although the readiness to discriminate against PWHIV is influenced by a number of factors, the two aforementioned in particular have a great impact. In addition it could be concluded that educational programs designed to inform would be more effective in changing the readiness to discriminate than by confronting negative attitudes towards homosexuality. Educational programs should concentrate on reducing unreasonable fears of infection and improving the subjective competence of individuals to cope with the challenge of AIDS. It is also necessary to spread information about the existing public assistance and self-help.
