Description: The Young Black Men's Peer Education Project aims to work with socially excluded young black men aged 16 - 25 yrs. who reside in a number of Greater Manchester inner city communities of Hulme, Moss Side and Trafford. Using a variety of community and youth work methods and approaches, the young men form groups and work through sexual health related issues which impact on their daily lives, such as HIV and AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections, sexuality, relationships and others. This process acts as a tool to inform attitudes and behaviour. After further training in building confidence, self-esteem, facilitation and group work skills the young men then go on to become peer educated in their community settings Issues: In this instance the practice of Peer Education attempts to empower peers by receiving the correct information as opposed to mis-information, which in turn informs attitudes and behaviour in leading more positive lifestyles. Conclusion: The Project believes that the practice of Peer Education is a positive way forward when working with young black men, but models of good practice need to be more easily accessible for inner city communities to benefit from this approach.
