Coordination of STD/Aids Program of the City of Sao Paulo / Nursing School of the University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Issues: Since the beginning of the epidemic of Aids in Brazil, in mid eighties, the Ministry of Health and the National Coordination of STD/Aids were worried in qualifying the health work force for HIV/Aids prevention and assistance. It is well know that the nursing work force in our country represents more than 50% of the work force of the health area. Thinking about the importance of this situation, we have been qualifying the nursing work force since 1996. Description: During all these years we have been training the nursing work force of SDT/Aids specialized services of the cities of the State of Sao Paulo and from the huge city of Sao Paulo. Analyzing and evaluating all these qualifying opportunities, and listening to the speech off all the participants involved, we came to many important conclusions. Lessons Learned: Qualifying policies are a valid and important strategy not only for service organization, but also for personal and professional development. These qualifying policies must emerge from the real training needs that emerge from the reality of the STD/Aids services and have to answer to the health needs of the population. These policies contribute for the satisfaction of the nursing work force, meaning an enhancement in quality of provided care. Recommendations: One may therefore conclude that such policies should be encouraged, since they transform practice, improve the nursing working force not only in its technical expertise, but also in the political and ethical domains, incorporating the dimensions of care into nursing practices.
