  • A comparison of arrest data from 1997 and 2006 showed that, nationwide, the number of males arrested decreased 7.1 percent, but the number of females arrested increased 4.0 percent.
  • The number of female juveniles (persons under age 18) arrested decreased 17.6 percent, and the number of male juveniles arrested declined 26.4 percent when data for the two years were compared.
  • The number of males arrested for violent crimes in 2006 dropped 14.0 percent from the number arrested in 1997, and the number of females arrested for violent crimes decreased 2.7 percent when data for those same years were compared.
  • Data for juveniles showed declines in arrests for both genders for violent crimes in 2006 when compared with data from 1997. Arrests of males under age 18 were down 21.6 percent, and the number of female juveniles arrested for violent crimes declined 11.7 percent.
  • For property crimes, the number of males arrested in 2006 declined 27.1 percent when compared with the 1997 data, and the number of females arrested decreased 18.3 percent.
  • Arrests of juveniles for property crimes also declined for both genders—47.6 percent for males and 34.6 percent for females.
  • The number of males arrested for driving under the influence was down 6.0 percent; however, arrests of females for this offense increased 29.1 percent in 2006 when compared with data from 1997.
  • Arrests of female juveniles for driving under the influence in 2006 rose 39.3 percent from the 1997 number.
