Indianpreneur of the Month
Indianpreneur of the Month: Annie LaVerdure-O'Brien!
April’s Indianpreneur of the Month is also our
Women’s Business Center Success Story! She is Annie LaVerdure-O’Brien, the
founder and owner of LVD Media and LVD Films. She is a member of the Turtle
Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, and was born and raised in the Northwest.
Her businesses started when she was in graduate
school and began doing consulting. At first, it was just a little here and
there, but it soon evolved into a full-time career. To protect her growing
business, Annie decided to get a business name, an LLC, and, she laughs, a bank
account. Originally working in advertising, she found her passion in media and
public relations, which LVD Media handles, and film production, which LVD Films
handles.
Owning her own business feeds what Annie calls
her “workaholic personality,” while still allowing her to spend time with her
dogs. Her husband owns his own business as well, and both of them work from
home, so they often can collaborate on projects. When starting out, she got
emotional support from her family and friends, and business support from her
professors and networking. And of course, making mistakes and learning from
them. She has faced some bumps on the road to success, however. “I finally got
the right balance between personal life and work, and now the bump is that I
want to expand. With the economic times getting loans and capital has been
difficult.” While she wants to expand and create jobs in the community, she’s
found it tough, but she is optimistic that she will be able to expand soon and
give opportunities to people in the community.
Annie says that her companies’ biggest strength
is the personal care and the quality of work she provides, and she plans to
keep that as she expands. An ideal size for her would be hiring an office
manager and two full-time employees, with maybe a few part-timers, but not
getting too big. But Annie isn’t just concerned with taking care of her
clients. She is also passionate about reaching out to the community around her,
and advises other Native small businesses to do the same. “Becoming involved is
really important. I’m going to be getting appointed on a state board and I’m on
the development board for Oregon HEAT.” She emphasizes volunteering as well.
The most important advice she has for Native
American entrepreneurs? “Find what you love to do and just do it. It sounds
cliché but it’s important to follow your heart and your gut. There’s been a few
times I haven’t followed my gut and I kick myself for it.” Great words to live
by!
