Cabrillo National Monument is a great place for kids of all ages – there’s plenty to learn!
The Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to learn about the park. Print out this page and bring it with you, then visit the different areas of the park to learn more about 16th century exploration, ships and aircraft, whales, natural and military history.
Visit the Exhibit Room
- Name two explorers and tell what happened to them.
- Name three instruments used for navigation.
- Who repaired a sail if it was torn?
Look at the View from the Visitor Center and Statue area
- List two types of ships that can be found in San Diego Bay.
- List two types of aircraft that can be seen in the skies of San Diego.
- At the Statue: Do you think that the sculptor used a photograph of Cabrillo as a model to help him carve the statue? Why or why not?
Go to the Whale Overlook, past the Lighthouse
- Where do gray whales feed?
- Where are gray whale calves born?
- At what time of year can you see the migrating whales here?
Take a hike on the Bayside Trail
- Draw the leaves of two types of plants you see along the trail.
- What are the names of these plants?
- How do the leaves feel? (Be careful not to break the leaves off of the plants, and be sure to stay on the trail.)
- List two types of animals that live in the coastal sage scrub ecosystem. What do you think they eat?
See the Military History exhibit, on your way to the Lighthouse
- One company stationed at Fort Rosecrans kept a dog named _______.
