Foraging ecology, population dynamics and translocation feasibility of the Laysan Duck (Anas laysanensis).

The Laysan Duck Anas laysanensis has one of the most restricted ranges of any duck species and has been listed as an endangered species since 1964. The small, isolated populations are extremely vulnerable to extinction from chance events. The establishment of additional wild populations on other islands through geographic translocation of wild birds and reintroduction of captive-reared birds is currently being planned and may help reduce the risk of extinction. The current size of the adult population in 1999 is estimated at 322 + 32.
Endangered Laysan Ducks
Laysan Duck (Anas laysanensis)
We have initiated genetic studies of the Laysan Duck to begin to evaluate genomic variability of the wild population on Laysan by means of AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) analyses. These data will provide population managers with additional criteria for maintaining diversity in populations subject to artificial manipulation through captive breeding or geographic translocation.
