NRC TO HOLD
MEETING MARCH 28 AT WESTINGHOUSE FUEL PLANT |
||
Nuclear Regulatory Commission
officials will meet with officials of the Westinghouse commercial nuclear fuel
plant in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 28 to discuss the agency's latest
review of the facility's safety performance. The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is open to observation by the public. NRC personnel will be available prior to the close of the meeting to answer questions from interested observers. The NRC review evaluates Westinghouse safety performance in the major areas of safety operations, safeguards, radiological controls, facility support and special topics for a period from January 9, 2000, through December 29, 2001. The review found that Westinghouse is operating the plant safely and in general compliance with NRC requirements. The review noted plant senior management's pro-active approach in implementing additional security measures since the attacks of September 11. However, the NRC said needed improvements in the plant's item control program, nuclear material transportation program, and criticality safety controls will result in an increased level of NRC inspection effort, above the agency's core inspection program, in those areas. A copy of the NRC letter to Westinghouse which outlines details of the review is available by contacting OPA2@nrc.gov or electronically for public inspection from the NRC web site at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/ADAMS.html |
