Where the Columbia River Plateau in Washington (upper left) meets Idaho's Northern Rocky Mountain ranges, MODIS has detected several fires, indicated with red outlines. To the west, cloud shadows stand out in black against the Plateau. Still farther west, several of Washington's famous peaks can be seen, including the white-capped Mt. Rainier (northernmost), Mt. Adams to the southeast, and Mt. St. Helens Volcano, to its west.
