easy, rapid and inexpensive way to analyze for dispersants in seawater. As an alternative
to the analyses of dispersants, analyses of dispersed oil may yield some useful
information. A suggested analytical protocal is as follows: 1) filter the water through
teflon filters to remove oily droplets; 2) extract the water with methylene chloride(
20-30ml CH2Cl2 to 100ml H2O);  3) concentrate the extract and displace with normal hexane;
4) fractionate the extract on silica gel into saturate(f1) and aromatic(f2) fractions;
5)analyze each fraction by capillary GC; 6)analyze the f2 fraction by GCMS for the 2, 3,
and 4 ring polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and their C1 to C3 alkyl homologs; 7)
compare results between water accomodated oil and water containing dispersed oil.
