On Jan. 23, 2007 the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) announced the 2007 winners of the FLC National Awards for Excellence in Technology Transfer. A group at the U of A poultry center was recognized for novel technology to reduce human foodborne pathogens in poultry. They included USDA ARS: Ann Donoghue; University of Arkansas: Dan Donoghue, Billy Hargis and Guermillo Tellez.

 

Annie Donoghue received the Helene Cecil Leadership Award.  This award is given to a female PSA member for scientific contributions in the field of poultry science or for significant leadership in the promotion or development opportunities for women in poultry science.  Dr. Donoghue’s research is in the area of improving the reproductive efficiency of poultry. 

 

Federal Laboratory Consortium Honors ARS Poultry Scientist for Technology Transfer Success:  On August 30, Annie Donoghue, research leader, ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, attended the Federal Laboratory Consortium Mid-Continent Meeting in Colorado Springs, CO.  Donoghue was given the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award for collaborative research, with the University of Arkansas, on developing novel probiotics for poultry.

 

William Huff was given the prestigious “Fellow” title by the Poultry Science Association (PSA) at its annual meeting in Edmonton, Canada, on July 19th.  The title of Fellow is granted for professional distinction and contributions to the field of poultry science without concern to longevity.  A unanimous vote by the Board of Directors of PSA is required to elect any nominee as Fellow.

 

International Poultry Scientific Forum (IPSF) sponsored by the Southern Poultry Science Society, the Southern Conference on Avian Diseases and the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association held in Atlanta Jan 23-24, 2006.  Fausto Solis de los Santos, Ph.D. student from Santiago City in the Dominican Republic, won the Outstanding Research Presentation Award in the area of physiology and pathology for his paper on gut development in turkey poults.  De los Santos is a Fulbright Scholar and his major professor is Dr. Ann Donoghue.

Broiler Research Award

William E. Huff

The Broiler Research Award of $2500 and a plaque, instituted by the National Chicken Council, is given for distinctive research work that has a strong economic impact on the broiler industry. Research may be conducted in any major discipline and is evaluated primarily on the economic influence the work has had or will have on the industry. The award is given for research published in the preceding 5 calendar years.

Dr. Guiqiong Liu Associate Professor in Animal Genetics, Yangzhou University College of Animal Science and Technology.  Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, Jiangsu, P.R. China is a visiting professor working in Annie Donoghue's lab for a six month sabbatical this spring.  She will be working on molecular aspects of sperm storage tubules in poultry and exploring methods for reducing pathogens in poultry semen.

 

On April 17-20, 2007, microbiologist Dr. Geraldine Huff, ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, was invited to present a paper entitled "Stress, wet litter, and colibacillosis"  at the 1st Turkey Science and Production Conference in Macclesfield, UK.

 

Ardeypharm Gmbh., Sept 17, 2006: ARS Scientist, Geraldine Huff, Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, has been invited to give talk entitled, “Efficacy of Nissle 1917 as a Non-antibiotic Growth Promoter in Poultry,” in Herdecke, Germany.

 

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Research Leader Presents Data at the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) UK Branch Symposium:  On September 13-18, 2006, Ann Donoghue, research leader, ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, attended the 28th WPSA Symposium:  "Avian Gut Function, Health, and Disease," in Bristol, UK.  She presented research findings on mechanisms for pathogen control in the avian gastrointestinal tract.

 

12th European Poultry Conference, Sept 10-14, 2006:  ARS Scientist, Geraldine Huff, Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, will attend and give talk entitled “Oral Treatment with the Probiotic Escherichia Coli Nissle 1917 Improves Body Weight and Modulates the Stress Response of Poultry in Respiratory Challenges with Avian Pathogenic E. Coli”.  During this meeting, Alpharma, Inc. invited Dr. Huff to give a talk entitled, “The effects of Alphamune on turkey stress response, gut morphology, and resistance to Escherichia coli challenge,” in Verona, Italy. 

 

12th European Poultry Conference, Sept 10-14, 2006:  ARS Scientist, Narayan Rath, Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, will attend and give a talk entitled, “Thiram-induced tibial dyschondroplasia: a model to study its pathogenesis and prevention” in Verona, Italy.

 

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Research Leader Participates in International Food Safety Workshop:  On September 4-8, 2006, Ann Donoghue, research leader, ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit, Fayetteville, AR, participated in the 13th International Workshop on Campylobacter, Helicobacter, and Related Organisms, in Queensland, Australia.  Donoghue presented ARS research on bacteriocins reducing Campylobacter colonization and altering gut architecture in turkey poults, and on detecting Campylobacter in the reproductive tracts and semen of commercial turkeys.

 

Geraldine Huff was invited to present a paper entitled “Effects of a dietary yeast extract on the response to transport stress of turkey poults previously challenged with Escherichia coli” for the AAAP/AVMA Meeting, on July 14-21, 2006.

 

Ann Donoghue led a discussion group “Animal uses for probiotics and prebiotics: impact on antibiotic use” during the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics in Coleraine Northern Ireland, U.K., June 16-18.  Dr. Donoghue also participated in the Agricultural Research Service Salmonella Summit, June 28th in Washington DC.

 

Philip Moore presented paper entitled “Evaluation and Management of Ammonia Emissions from Poultry Litter” at the Workshop on Agricultural Air Quality: State of the Science, Bolger Center, Potomac, MD on June 5-8, 2006.

 

Bill Huff gave an invited presentation entitled “Bacteriophage: A Natural Alternative to Antibiotics to Prevent and Treat Animal Diseases and Reduce Food Borne Pathogens on Animal Products,” at the American Society for Microbiology Annual Meeting, held in Orlando, FL.  Dr. Huff was invited to be an External Examiner for Nibham Jamalludeen’s Ph.D. final Defense, and gave a talk entitled “ Bacteriophage: An alternative to antibiotics in animal agriculture” at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada on May 15-17, 2006.
