In the center of this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from November 8, 2002, Kentucky’s bluegrass country stands out in verdant green, while to the east the higher elevation of the southern reaches of the Appalachian Plateau are already showing the brown of autumn. The gray patch in the heart of bluegrass country is Lexington. Throughout the eastern U.S., MODIS detected a few scattered fires, which are marked in red.
