Environmental Carcinogenesis Division (ECD)
Organization

ECD Navigation

ECD is organized into three branches: the Cellular Toxicology Branch (CTB), The Molecular Toxicology Branch MTB and the Cancer Biology Branch (CBB). CTB focuses its research on the effects of chemical carcinogens on cellular functions, MTB provides an integration with the CTB such that similar problems are addressed but at the molecular and cellular levels and CBB has a primary aim of the carcinogenic potential of environmental chemicals using a modified chronic bioassay, together with developing an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of tumor induction using molecular and cellular techniques. The three branches seek a mechanistic understanding of the multi-stage processes of chemically-induced cancer and on the development and application of biomarkers that can be used in both human and animal studies. In all of these research efforts, the Division directs its research at improving the Agency's ability to develop reliable risk assessments by reducing uncertainty.
