Research Project: Phenotypic and Genotypic Comparison of Clostridium Difficile Isolates from a Semi-Closed Population of Swine and Humans in a Vertically Inte

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 6202-32000-020-44
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Nov 01, 2008
End Date: Apr 30, 2010

Objective:
Determine the prevalence of C. difficile (Cd) in a human population and compare the genetic relatedness to swine Cd isolates from the same location and on the same timeframe. Is there evidence that swine Cd can be transferred to humans?

Approach:
1. We will culture approximately 1,000 human wastewater samples for Cd. 2. Cd isolates will be tested for antibiotic sensitivities. 3. Using molecular methods, Cd isolates will be genotypically characterized. 4. Genotypic digital images (PFGE) will be sent to CDC for comparison of our Cd to our swine Cd and to other human Cd in their database.
