Welcome to the Rocky Mountain Region's Healthy
Forests and NFP Web page.
Healthy forests and
rangelands are important to our nation. They produce income, enjoyment,
and benefits to society and the environment. Currently, two-thirds
of federally managed wildlands in the lower 48 states are at risk
from catastrophic wildland fires. It is estimated nearly 10 million
acres of national forests and grasslands within the Rocky Mountain
Region will be at risk within the decade, compromising human safety
and ecosystem integrity.
We are committed to working with our partners to
reduce the wildfire risk and restore healthy forest and rangeland
conditions throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. The safety of firefighters
and communities depends on it.
What are we doing?
Using the tools provided through the Healthy Forest Initiative and
the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA), the region has accelerated
its efforts to reduce the problem of hazardous fuels. In fiscal
year 2006 (which began October 1, 2005) we treated over 175,000
acres.
We hope that you will be a frequent visitor to this
site to track our progress in reducing the fire risk near your community.
