U.S. Nuclear Power Plants are safe; the NRC is making them safer by offering plants the opportunity to use a new and scientifically sound way of reducing fire risks further. The NRC has modified its fire protection regulations to allow licensees to adopt, on a voluntary basis, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 805, "Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Light-Water Reactor Electric Generating Plants" (NFPA 805), in lieu of their existing fire protection licensing basis. This initiative is part of an NRC effort to incorporate risk information into the agency's regulations and enhance safety. For additional information, see the following related pages:
