Technical Abstract: The study of the responses of rice to non-nutritive minerals has numerous benefits. Rice is the current model plant for genomic studies of crops and with the sequencing of the rice genome, information obtained from rice can be extended to other organisms, which has been particularly valuable regarding mineral transport proteins. This review provides an overview of interactions between rice and non-nutritive elements: aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chlorine, cesium, germanium, mercury, iodine, lanthanum, nickel, lead, selenium, strontium, and vanadium. Studies on the uptake and transport of non-nutritive elements provide information on the uptake and transport of the nutritive minerals. In addition, this information can be used for phytoremediation of toxic elements from soil by rice plants.
