In 2005, the South was the Nation's most populous region with 36.3 percent of the population. Twenty-three percent of the Nation's population resided in the West, 22.3 percent in the Midwest, and 18.4 percent in the Northeast.
Except for motor vehicle thefts, most violent and property crimes occurred in the South; most motor vehicle thefts, (37.9 percent) occurred in the West.
An estimated 41.9 percent of all violent crimes occurred in the South. An estimated 23.0 percent of violent crimes took place in the West, 19.6 percent in the Midwest, and 15.5 percent in the North.
An estimated 41.1 percent of property crimes occurred in the South, 25.5 percent in the West, 21.2 percent in the Midwest, and 12.3 percent in the Northeast.
