In 2005, the violent crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants in the United States was 469.2. The property crime rate was 3,429.9 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants.
In Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), the violent crime rate was 509.7 violent incidents per 100,000 inhabitants; the property crime rate was nearly 3,600 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants.
In 2005, 90.1 percent of the estimated number of violent crimes and 87.0 percent of property crimes occurred in MSAs.
In cities outside metropolitan areas, the violent crime rate was 373.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. The property crime rate for cities outside metropolitan areas was nearly 4,000 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants.
In nonmetropolitan counties, the violent crime rate was 206.8 incidents per 100,000; the property crime rate was 1,700.1 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants.
