Research Project: Development of Advanced Renewable Energy Technologies for Agricultural Applications

Location: Renewable Energy and Manure Management Research

Project Number: 6209-13610-006-15
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2006
End Date: Sep 30, 2011

Objective:
Evaluate various materials for construction of wind turbine rotor blades and solar collectors. Evaluate the long-term performance of electrical wind turbines for powering irrigation pumps, evaluate the long-term performance of solar-powered systems for pumping livestock water, and determine the economic feasibility of water pumping systems powered by renewable energy.

Approach:
Two Micon 65/13M wind turbines will be used to field test new wind turbine blades now in development at Sandia National Laboratories. To support the blade testing, the individual control programs for the Micon wind turbines will be updated with new algorithms. New enhancements to the Accurate Time Synchronized Data Acquisition System (ATLAS), i.e. Ethernet programming capability, will be evaluated, along with the development of tools and techniques to increase the surety of distributed, hybrid, and energy applications.
