OPM Fourth Annual USS Theodore Roosevelt Toy Drive a Tremendous Success

BIG Donation Pushed Drive Over Its Goal; Donations Kept Coming
Over 1,700 Toys Collected for Children of Crewmembers

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Kay Coles James today announced the fourth annual OPM Toy Drive for the families of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (USS TR) crew has again exceeded expectations. Team OPM generously donated over 1,700 toys to honor the service of and help spread the holiday spirit with the USS TR crew.

"The generosity shown to the crewmembers and their families exemplifies the spirit of the season," stated James. "Donations came in from individuals, field offices and organizations associated with OPM. It was heart warming to see the gifts piling up in the collections bins. I am particularly grateful to Black's in Government, whose donations put the toy drive over its goal."

"It is an honor to contribute toys as part of Director James' and TEAM OPM's continued efforts to support and honor the troops of the USS TR," stated Larry M. Stoner, President of OPM's Blacks in Government (BIG) Chapter. "The spirit of giving is a part of BIG's heritage, and the holiday season reminds us to open our hearts and give to those around us.  In this small way, we thank our troops for their vigilance and sacrifice."

The toys will be delivered by OPM staff volunteers to the USS TR during their annual holiday party. James noted, "The holiday party itself illustrates the importance of the drive. This is where the spirit of the season is brought to life - in the smiles on children's faces and in the memories being created. It is a true honor to be a part of this wonderful event."

The Office of Personnel Management, which is housed in the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building officially "adopted" the USS Theodore Roosevelt shortly after September 11, 2001 when the ship was stationed in the Middle East during the war on terrorism. The ship was deployed for five months this year in support for Operation Iraqi Freedom and is continually undergoing sea testing, requiring the crew to spend long weeks from their families.

Over the past four years OPM employees have donated 4,117 toys for the annual holiday parties, 10,000 Valentines, two USO-style talent shows, more than 1,300 music CDs, 1,200 videos and hundreds of books, candy, popcorn, cards and toiletries to the 5,500 men and women on the ship.
