VALERIE LAU NAMED DIRECTOR OF POLICY

Washington, D.C.--Valerie Lau has been named Director of Policy by OPM Director Jim King. She will assist the Director in developing the policies that put his vision for the agency into action.

"Valerie's government experience and career development background will be a tremendous asset in addressing the 'people-side' of achieving better government," said Director King. "I am confident her contributions will greatly benefit OPM and the human resource community,"

Prior to joining OPM, Ms. Lau was a career consultant with Drake Beam Morin,, Inc., a career management firm,, where she advised employees in making career transition decisions and conducting job searches, She also has worked as a consultant with the Democratic National Committee job counseling center. Since 1989, Ms. Lau has been a member of the adjunct faculty of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School.

Ms. Lau's understanding of government was gained from 13 years service as a federal career employee. She last served as executive director of the Western Intergovernmental Audit Forum and as a senior evaluator for the U. S. General Accounting Office. Prior to that, she was an auditor with the Defense Contract Audit Agency. Ms. Lau began her federal career while still in college as a Taxpayer Service Representative for the Internal Revenue Service.

Ms. Lau, a CPA, received her B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley and her M.A. in Career Development from the John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California.
