MEMPHIS VISIT BY CLINTON PERSONNEL CHIEF TO FOCUS ON RACE RELATIONS, JOBS, SALUTE TO NURSING-STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

Washington, D.C. -- As part of the Clinton Administrations initiative on race, U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Janice Lachance will convene a round table discussion on race relations during her visit to Memphis on Monday, February 23.

Director Lachances round table gathering, sponsored by the Memphis Chamber of Commerce and the Memphis Race Relations & Diversity Institute, will be held at 7 p.m. at the:

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is the federal governments human resources agency. While daily providing the American public up-to-date employment information, OPM ensures that the nations civil service remains free of political influence and that federal employees are selected and treated fairly and on the basis of merit. OPM supports agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations, preparation of governments future leaders, compensation policy development, and programs to improve work force performance. The agency manages the federal retirement system, as well as the worlds largest employer-sponsored health insurance program serving more than nine million federal employees, retirees and their family members.

On Monday, February 23 at 10 a.m., Director Lachance will participate in a class at LeMoyne-Owen College. LeMoyne-Owen is a member institution of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with roots dating to 1862 and a current enrollment of approximately 1,000 students.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Director Lachance will meet with LeMoyne-Owen honor students to discuss federal employment opportunities and diversity.

At 2 p.m., the Director will meet with volunteers in Bridges, Inc, a program that operates out of the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and provides training and real-life work experience as nursing assistants to individuals on the welfare rolls.

The following day, Tuesday, February 24 at 7:30 a.m., Director Lachance will address the Memphis Federal Executive Association. The breakfast audience will hear the Presidents chief advisor on human resources issues share her thoughts on federal personnel initiatives.
