OPM Launches Class to Train Inspector General Management Officers
OPM Director James praises work of IG officers

Washington, D.C. - In its continuing effort to create a quality federal work force that honors the history and tradition of the Civil Service, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Center for Executive Leadership (CEL) at the Federal Executive Institute (FEI), in conjunction with the President’s Council on Integrity and Efficiency (PCIE) and the Executive Council on Integrity and Efficiency (ECIE), has developed a leadership workshop for senior managers in the Inspectors General (IG) community. The programs main goal is to assure that a cadre of leaders is prepared to step into leadership positions within the PCIE community.

“OPM is responsible for the protection of the Merit System Principles, ensuring Veterans’ Preference, guarding against prohibited personnel practices and promoting diversity in the federal work force,” stated OPM Director Kay Coles James. “This is a tremendous honor and responsibility and we have been able to accomplish this work because federal employees understand the importance of integrity and service to the nation. OPM appreciates the opportunity to provide quality training to the IG community and fully respects their role. The IG offices are a valuable resource to agency heads, Congress and the American taxpayer in maintaining accountability and reducing fraud and waste.”

The workshop was developed collaboratively between CEL faculty and PCIE members, and is being delivered in Charlottesville, Va. The first class was held August 3 through August 8, 2003, and it was attended by 25 senior managers from both the Audit and Investigation divisions of the Inspector General Offices as well as from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. Future classes will be held in the next fiscal year.

The workshop is organized around four themes:

  • Leading High PerformanceOrganizations
  • The Creative Leader
  • The Leader as Coach
  • The Global Leader
