OPM SYMPOSIUM TO ADDRESS PERSONNEL TRANSFERS
Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Office of Personnel Management will sponsor a one-day symposium to assist federal human resource managers throughout government develop systems which can be used to transfer employees to other areas of responsibility and help the Clinton-Gore Administration fulfill its promise to reinvent government.
The National Performance Review, Vice President Gore's report on creating a government that works better and costs less, said federal agencies must be flexible in responding to changing demands of customers and agency service delivery standards. Moving personnel to areas of need, either within or outside the organization or agency, is a key component of this flexibility.
Entitled "Federal Employees in Transition: Strategies for Bright Futures", the symposium will engage participants and human resource management professionals in discussions on employee reassignments and the resources needed to implement assistance programs. Model programs will be showcased. The symposium also will include presentations on retraining, career redesign, outplacement and work force planning.
The Administration plans to reduce 100,000 federal positions by 1995. In all, 252,000 positions will be cut from the federal payroll by 1998. The National Performance Review said agencies could become more efficient and better providers of services to their customers by redesigning their delivery infrastructures.
The symposium will be held on Thursday, January 27, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the OPM Conference Center, Room 1350, 1900 E Street, NW, Washington, DC.
