Through demonstration and training projects, led the way in bringing cardiac intensive care capability to Missouri. Today over 80% of Missouri hospitals have this capability, extending the lives of hundreds of cardiac patients each year. Trained over 2,000 nurses i n cardiac intensive care techniques. Through such programs as the School Heart Sounds Screening Program, Cardiac Care Missouri, Cervical Cytology, and others, helped to educate the public,concerning heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and other killer diseases. Developed useful communications tools such as Audio Message Center and Telelecture as information resources for providers and consumers of health services. Through Project Hi Blood in Kansas City, used indigenous personnel to screen over 20,000 predominantly black residents of the inner city for hypertension. Provided effective followup care. Demonstrated that a radioisotope diagnostic facility could be useful and self-supporting in a rural area. Provided assistance and support in the develovm ent of the new medical school in Kansas City. Demonstrated that 12 small community hospitals, through cooperative efforts, could strengthen themselves and improve health services for some 200,000 people in Northwest Missouri. Supported projects which have provided programs to improve pharmaceutical services in small hospitals and nursing homes throughout Missouri. Provided strong support to the development and early operation of the Missouri Health Care Foundation. Assisted the group in establishing standards of medical practice. 1/8/75 -2- Provided technical assistance to most of the CHP lb' Agencies now operative. Provided technical assistance which led to the establishment of the Western Missouri Area Health Education Center. supported programs designed to extend the capabilities o nurses, ie: Pediatric Nurse Associate Docent Nurse Outreach Nurse Associate for the Neuro-Handicapped Strongly supported the State EMS Plan,thtough some 19 projects throughout the State. These projects involved community assessment and plan development, provision of technical support, and training of personnel. Supported the organization of A consortium of health providers and educational institutions in Central Missouri aimed at determining manpower shortages and training personnel to satisfy them. Since 1968,.administered the State Renal Disease Program, which since then has grown from $100,000 to $1,000,000. Served, at the request of HEW, as convenor of Missouri kidney authorities. Developed data, and organized materials which have,'been proposed as a basis for a multiregional kidney network. THIS YEAR operating 77 projects, including 14 staff activities. These are located in every section of the State. Areas of program emphasis are: Emergency Medical Services Health Manpower Ambulatory Care Integrated Health Delivery Renal Disease NOTE: Each activity is the product of local initiation, has received careful review before being initiated, and continues to receive technical assistance and monitoring throughout the support period.
