Comparison of Web-Based and Citrix-Based Access to ADAMS

Features

Windows-based database and document management system with a FIND search tool

  • Web-based search engine searches text of documents using a set of internal dictionaries (indexes)
  • Several Web search features available, including Hit ranking by relevancy, Semantic expansion, "Already seen" indicator (eyeballs), Natural language queries
  • Select from three search query modes: Concept, Pattern, and Boolean
  • Users must download and install a Citrix software plugin
  • ADAMS Document Manager is opened from the ADAMS Web page or from an icon previously installed on the desktop

Initial Screen

Opens in the ADAMS Document Manager window

Opens Basic ADAMS Web Search query box (Concept search) where searchers can enter words or phrases to obtain search results

  • Folder contents can be browsed, for example users can browse new files released in a Daily Folder
  • Tools menu is used to open the ADAMS Find search window
Contents of Daily folders cannot be browsed, but users can search for files released to the public on a specified date with Advanced Boolean search
Initial Search

Simple Find search window is opened

Users enter words in a query box

Values can be entered in one or more profile fields (limited to field names displayed on the screen) or in the text field

Initial search is a Concept search limited to the first 100 hits. To perform Boolean or Pattern search or expanded Concept search, use the Advanced Search option

Pick lists of values are available for several fields Changes can be made to results list default settings after the search has been completed
Boolean searching is limited to implied AND between fields Use Boolean operators in search phrases in the text query box
Wild cards or quotes can be used in text search field Wild cards or quotes can be used
Advanced Search

For field searches, users select from a pick list of field names, then a pick list of Boolean operators, then a pick list of values

Users can select Concept, Pattern, or Boolean mode searches

Users can also locate profile values from a list of known values with the Browse Values option In addition to the text query box, users can enter values to be searched into profile fields (pick lists are available for three fields)
Users can select profile fields to be displayed in results list under Results Options tab Users can change the profile fields to be displayed in the results list
Text searches can be defined by proximity and word order
  • Searches can be refined to narrow results list
  • Searches can be refined to find documents "more like" a particular hit

Boolean Searches

Searches limited to implied AND between fields in Simple Find

OR search statements between fields can be typed manually in the text query box

AND/OR operators can be used between fields OR searches available only within fields in Advanced search
Printing and Saving Results Lists
  • Create citation lists by highlighting files in the results list to create a report
  • Select a report format from a list of pre-formatted options
  • Available display formats include all fields or selected fields
  • A text file generated by the system can then be saved or printed
  • Results lists can be printed with the Print Screen key
  • Users can also select text from the results list then copy and paste selected text into a user-created document that can then be printed or saved
Packages

Packages can be located by right-clicking on a file name, selecting Properties from the menu, and then clicking on the Packages tab

Package and Member icons are displayed in the results list

Contents of the Package can be viewed by double clicking on the icon or right-clicking on the file and selecting Contents from a menu Users can click on the package icon to view all package contents and can click on the member icon to view the packages for which the document is a member
Displaying File Properties

A complete list of profile fields for any document can be viewed by right-clicking on a file title, selecting Properties from the menu, then clicking on the Profile tab

To view the available profile fields, they must be displayed in the results list

Printing files
  • A limited list of Citrix-compatible printers is available, or users can download the ScrewDrivers software
  • Citrix must have full access to the user's hard drive

Dependent upon the user's computer

Saving files

Both TIFF and PDF files can be saved then retrieved off line, but user must allow Citrix full access to the local drive

  • No security issues
  • PDF and TIFF files can be saved to the local drive
  • Dependant upon the user's computer
Saving Searches
  • Search statements can be saved as files then retrieved for reuse in Advanced Search
  • Retrieved search files can also be edited to revise the initial saved search statement

Searching Within Files

Users can search forward or backward in an open OCR text file to view occurrences of any search term with "Find" dialog box

For OCR text, the application takes you to the best hit. Scroll down to view additional highlighted hits

Viewing Files

Double-click on a file name or right-click for menu to open text, view text, or view image

  • Click on the file icon to view the file
  • Click on the title to view OCR text
  • Some users may need to download an image viewer to view TIFF files
