NRC EXTENDS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD ON BASIS FOR ESTABLISHING A
NATIONAL SOURCE TRACKING SYSTEM FOR CERTAIN SEALED SOURCES

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the public comment period on the change in the basis for the proposed rule implementing a National Source Tracking System (NSTS), which would enhance controls for certain sealed radioactive materials used in industry, academia and medicine. The change in basis is from the NRC’s authority to promote the common defense and security to the NRC’s authority to protect public health and safety. Comments will be accepted until July 28, 2006.

Interested parties may submit comments to: Secretary, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, ATTN: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff. Comments may also be e-mailed to: rulemaking.comments@nrc.gov, or sent through the NRC's rulemaking Web page at http://ruleforum.llnl.gov. Comments may also be hand delivered to: 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md., 20852, between 7:30 am and 4:15 pm on federal workdays. Faxed comments made be sent to: Secretary, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission at (301) 415-1101. Please include the number RIN 3150-AH48 in the subject line of all comments.

Comments on rulemakings are made available to the public in their entirety on the NRC rulemaking Web site. Personal information will not be removed.
