RIV: 99-35 October 13, 1999
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with the public on Wednesday, October 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. to present information on the GE Vallecitos Nuclear Center and answer questions from local officials and the general public.
The meeting will be at the Shrine Events Center, 170 Lindbergh Avenue, Livermore, California. All interested citizens are invited to attend.
GE Vallecitos is located near Pleasanton, California. The meeting was requested by public officials representing Alameda County and the City of Pleasanton to discuss federally-licensed activities at GE Vallecitos, shipments of irradiated nuclear fuel received at the facility, and the work done with the fuel after it arrives.
The GE Vallecitos site has been engaged in research, development, testing, and post irradiation examination of reactor fuel since the 1950's. The GE Vallecitos site includes a Radioactive Materials Laboratory where the post-irradiation examinations are done. The site also has three permanently shutdown reactor facilities which were part of the early technology development programs for commercial nuclear power. A small, 100 kilowatt research reactor is still in operation at the site. GE Vallecitos also fabricates radioactive sources used in medicine and industry under a license issued by the State of California.
The meeting will include a short presentation by representatives of GE Vallecitos on site history and current operations. This will be followed by presentations by NRC representatives on the licensing and inspection programs covering the various activities authorized by the NRC licenses issued to GE Vallecitos.
The meeting is not a hearing and is not being held as a formal proceeding related to the regulation of the GE Vallecitos facility. However, members of the public will have an opportunity to ask questions. ###
