NRC MONITORS HURRICANE BRET
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is monitoring storm preparations at South Texas Project, a twin reactor site near Bay City, Texas, as Hurricane Bret approaches the Texas Gulf coast.
NRC Region IV has staffed its Incident Response Center in Arlington, Texas, and sent an additional inspector to STP to join the three resident inspectors already on duty at the site.
While the worst of the storm is not expected to hit the reactor site at this hour, safety procedures require the plant to begin shutting down should winds be projected to reach 73 miles per hour. Other preparations such as securing loose equipment and making sure adequate supplies and personnel are available have already been completed by STP Nuclear Operating Company, the plant's operator.
Safe operation of the plant remains the responsibility of the STP Nuclear Operating Company. The NRC's role is to monitor events for compliance with safety procedures and advise the operator if necessary.
