NRC APPROVES
POWER UPRATE FOR BRUNSWICK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT |
|||||||||
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission
has approved a request by Carolina Power & Light Co. to increase the generating
capacity of the Brunswick nuclear power plant, Units 1 and 2, by 15 percent
each.
The power uprate at the plant, near Southport, North Carolina, will increase the generating capacity of Unit 1 from 841 megawatts electric to 958; and for Unit 2 from 835 megawatts electric to 951. The licensee intends to implement the power uprates immediately for Unit 1 and next year for Unit 2. The NRC's safety evaluation of the requested power uprate for the plant focused on several areas, including nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, operations, and other technical specification changes. The NRC staff determined that the licensee could safely increase the power output of the reactor primarily by using new fuel in the core and making certain specified plant modifications. |
